In 2003 the USSS was transferred from the Department of the Treasury to the Department of Homeland Security. USSS is mandated by Congress to carry out integrated missions of protection and investigations. More specifically, the USSS protects the President and other high-level officials and investigates counterfeiting and other financial crimes, including financial institution fraud, identity theft, and computer fraud and computer-based attacks on U.S. financial, banking, and telecommunications infrastructure.
