The Listing Status of a company signifies whether the company's stocks are traded in a stock exchange or not. So if a company in India has shares open to public and those shares are traded in NSE (National Stock Exchange), then that company is a Listed company. Such companies have their Corporate Identification Numbers stating with L.

Note: A listed company is a Public company but not all Public companies are listed companies.

Criteria

In order for a Company to be Listed, its shares must be traded on an official stock exchange. It must adhere to the listing requirements of that exchange, which may include how many shares are listed and a minimum earnings level.

Effect on Corporate Identity Number

The Corporate Identity Number must have its first character as L if the company is listed, and U otherwise.
